UMA Cornerstone and the Hall of Flags

UMA Cornerstone/TRIO is going to the Hall of Flags on March 5, 2014.

UMA Cornerstone Staff and Students will have an opportunity to share with their legislators how UMA Cornerstone has had an impact on students’ lives. Students in this program have similar hardships such as low income, first generation or are disabled but also, these students want to become a college graduate. UMA Cornerstone/TRIO has helped to make it possible for many students. Are you one of these students or know of a UMA Cornerstone Student? Please come to the State House Hall of Flags and show your support! The event will be from 9 am to 12 pm. For more information contact Tony Staffere by phone: (207) 621-3201 or by email: anthony.staffiere@maine.edu

How to Self-Motivate Yourself

You just got home from a long day at work and a class. You are tired and just want to go bed or crash in front of the tv. But you know you have that nagging assignment and it’s due soon. You want to do it but have no motivation whatsoever to even start it. Have no fear! You can find a way! Read on to find out how!

Here are some ways you can motivate yourself:
  1. Think of why you started college. What was your goal? Write it down and post it where you can see it every day, like the bathroom mirror.
  2. "Don’t do something tomorrow when you can do it today." – Tony Robbins      Procrastination is your enemy. Plan a fun activity for when you are done with the assignment.
  3. Imagine how good it will feel to finish the assignment and have the weight lifted off your shoulders
  4. Make it enjoyable to do. The more enjoyable it is, the more you would want to do it. The more you do it, the better you get at it. No one wants to do something they despise.
  5. Act like you ARE motivated. The body itself is a powerful tool in your overall mood.
  6.  Think positive thoughts. Ask yourself, “What am I HAPPY about in my life right now?” and "Why am HAPPY about it?"
  7. Don’t fear failure. Failure is failure only if you let it be. You can redefined it as a learning experience. No one can ride a bike perfectly the first time. You may fall off but get up. Dust off your pants and move on.
  8. Break the assignment down into bite size tasks. No one can swallow an 8 oz juicy steak whole without any choking. It is cut down to smaller sizes so it can be easily chewed and swallowed. It is more enjoyable that way, too.
  9. Think of quotes and phrases that motivate you. Write them down and put them where you will see them often. You can also record them so you can hear them while you work or when you need a boost.
  10. Listen to upbeat music that motivate you to do that assignment.

There are many other ways to motivate yourself. Do you have any secret ways that work for you and want to share them? Please comment your tricks of the trade below.
